Dow Travel Funding

Background to the Scheme:  As part of its commitment to the training of research students, the Medical School has established a travel fund to provide support for postgraduate research students attending and presenting their work at relevant national and international conferences.  The scheme is administered by the Research Degrees Committee and was piloted in 1997/98.

Value of Grants:   Grants will normally be for a proportion of the projected costs and individual grants will not exceed £500 to a maximum of a £5000 fund.

Eligibility:  Applicants must be registered with the University of Dundee for a Postgraduate Research Degree (i.e. not taught postgraduate) in the Medical School.  Students will be eligible to receive only one award during their degree study period, and travel must be completed before the end of the maximum student’s study period ( (i.e. normally within 4 years of first matriculation for full time students and within six years for part-time students). Postgraduate studies of differing lengths (e.g. 4yr PhD) will be taken into account. Where students have extended their period of study, e.g. for family reasons or through illness, this will be taken into account.

If you have previously received an award from the scheme, you cannot apply again.

Qualifying Meetings:  Meetings must be relevant to the applicant’s research field, and travel may be within the UK or overseas.  Applicants must provide evidence of active participation in the meeting, and this should include a) a copy of the abstract relating to the work which will be presented, and b) copy of the completed meeting registration form.

Conditions and Payment of Grant:  Grants are not transferable and a grantee who is unable to use the award for the purpose set out in his or her application must return it to the Graduate School Office.  Claim forms will be sent to successful applicants, and should be returned completed and signed by the applicant.  Payment will be in the form of a cheque, payable to the grantee, issued directly from the Finance Office.

It is a condition of acceptance of an award that successful applicants will provide a brief resumé of the highlights of the conference within 1 month of returning.
