Why study for a postgraduate research degree?
The School has a large and vibrant research community of 250 PhD, MD and research masters students. The School offers a world class research environment, and excellent support facilities.
Students attracted to study for a postgraduate degree share in the School's mission to understand the underlying causes of disease and to develop treatment and care that impacts on patient care and quality of life.
The School's postgraduate community is greatly enhanced by its international research students (which includes over 30 different nationalities). International (and national students are attracted by the quality and breadth of biomedical and healthcare research carried out in the School.
Dundee is the destination for many International Students.
The School of Medicine is currently offering a maximum of ten Scholarships per year. These scholarships are available to all self-funded PhD students from outwith the European Union who have accepted a PhD position in the School of Medicine, and will provide up to £6,500 towards the annual fee. They will be awarded on merit and are for PhD degrees only. Applicants must provide evidence they are self-funding, and this should be submitted together with the application form and other relevant supporting documents. The scholarships will run with the academic year (Sept – Aug). Please note that, if other funding is put in place during a student's period of study, the scholarship will be withdrawn. Scholarships will not be awarded retrospectively.
The School has a wide range of opportunities suitable for self-funding or overseas government PhD scholarship applicants or holders e.g Science without Borders.
MSc by Research
All schools in the School can offer MSc degrees by research. These are appropriate for staff and external applicants who require a specialist postgraduate degree to progress professionally.
The School of Medicine offers MD degrees to medical graduates of the University of Dundee or local NHS medical staff. At any point there are approximately 45 students undertaking an MD.
